Essay Tip: How to perfectly center-align your title

Following the essay's standard format for the title, it should be written on the first line of your essay sheet and should be center-aligned. When done electronically, it is easy to position the title in the center of a page line but not when handwritten. The succeeding paragraphs illustrates the simple technique on how to center-align your essay's title in the essay sheet.

Tutorial on how to center-align the title in the essay sheet

1. Write the title that you have formulated in a scratch paper. Make the size and spacing as close as how you will write your essay.

   

2. Place the scratch paper (with your title written on it) on top of the essay sheet/where you will write your composition to project its position.

   

   If it is too long and you need to make it in 2 or more lines, observe these notes:

   • Avoid making every lines with almost equal in length.
   • If your title will be in 2 lines, aim it to shape like either trapezoid or inverted trapezoid.
   • If your title will be in 3 or more lines, aim it to shape like an irregular diamond.
   • Be careful when deciding on how you will cut each line. Keep in mind that the next (every) line should still be sensible. Use a marker as guide.
   

3. Position your title in your essay sheet, estimate (for each line) if both sides are with equal space. To be precise, find the center of both of your title and essay sheet, have them aligned to each others' centers and start writing in the essay sheet parallel to the starting point of your title (written in the scratch paper). You can do it by the following instruction:

   • For your title (written in the scratch paper with markings). To find its center, just fold it into half. Do it for every line/partition you have assigned. The folds is the center.
   
   • For your essay sheet. You can also fold it into half to find its center. For the particular sheet that is shown in the picture, the title line is labeled with 'TITLE' and is already centered in the page. The second letter 'T' indicates the center.
   

That's it! Your essay's title is (almost) perfectly aligned in the center of your essay sheet.
